We met Ronny, the tour operator of this special Jakarta Tour, at his home in Pondok Kelapa area, East Jakarta. He had just finished guiding a foreign visitor. ''Sorry, I can not take you. Because the guest did not want to visit the media coverage,''he said.

The guest is one of an embassy official. "He's in a special mission", he said and he refused to describe in detail.

Ronny's wife, Anneke Rompas, then joined in the living room, carrying a glass of warm coffee. Ronny said, the tour was a bit slow this month.

Controversy? Ronny nodded. Since the special Jakarta tour was covered by a national television and written by the foreign media, he often criticized. I was accused of selling of poverty. Actually, not at all. I just wanted to get them (tourists) to the local residents in Jakarta as it is", he said.

As a director of short films and theatrical, Ronny often accompany his art colleagues from abroad. "I usually just take them to museums, to Ancol, or to the public sights. I am tired of myself, they are also bored," he said, then laughed.

By accident, while accompanying a friend from Australia, Ronny met with Maskun, a guard tower at the Maritime Museum in the city area, Jakarta. "Then, I asked where his home Apparently close. We then go and meet with Maskun's friendly neighbors. It turned out that my friend was impressed,''he said.

Ronny start this special Jakarta Tour at the beginning of February 2008.

Balinese Christmas Traditions

It may have no religious significance to most Balinese, because most of them are Hinduism, Christmas marks one of the island’s two tourist high seasons. As result it is a time of good cheer, friendliness and high hopes for the future; three very good reasons for celebrating Christmas traditions no matter what your religious persuasion.

Balinese Christians celebrate Christmas traditionally. They went to church dressed in customary on Christmas Eve. Young girls and mothers use "kebaya", while men use black "kamen" and white shirt, complete with Balinese headband. Church complex is also decorated with "penjor", a series of young coconut leaf on a piece of bamboo, a typical Balinese decoration.

In Tuka village, Kuta, Badung regency, along the road are decorated with "penjor", add a festive celebration of Christmas. It is a tradition handed down from ancestors. Tuka is the first village in Bali where the population embraced Christianity since 1935.

"Penjor" decoration is one effort to preserve Balinese art and culture heritage, in addition to maintaining and establishing harmony between faiths that had been established.

On Christmas day I host a special supper for Balinese friends and relatives; and every year I find my self fielding more and more questions about the significance of this day. Why do Christian celebrate it? Why do some people spell it X-mas? Why do they decorate trees and exchange presents? Who was Santa Claus?

Some of those customs go so far back in history that even many of today's Christians no longer remember how they originated.

Christmas, the 25th of December, is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Few theologians today think that was the actual day of His birth but the day was officially set by the Catholic Church in A.D 440. X is the 22nd letter of Greek alphabet, chi, and was used for centuries by church officials as an abbreviation of Xpurros, the Greek word for Christ.

Christmas falls two days after the Winter Solstice; one of the two times in the year when the Sun is furthest from the Equator. The Solstice begins on December 21st. and in the Northern Hemisphere marks the beginning of winter. Many pagans believe that on Solstice and Equinox the temporal world where we live touches the Spiritual World. They are magical times and each has a special significance and lesson. Summer Solstice, for instance, or Midsummer's Night, is a celebration of both life and death. Since it is the longest day of the year, June 21st marks the triumph of the Sun and light, but also marks the beginning of the Sun's decline into darkness and death. Winte Solstice, or Yule, has the same duality. The triumph of darkness and death also marks the rebirth of the new Sun.

In ancient Greece the Lenai festival was held in December and was probably a Winter Solstice Ritual : the Rustic or Rural Dionysia commemorating the birth of the new Sun Child and fertility in general. The ancient Roman celebrated the festival of Saturnalia from December 19th to the 25th; a week of merrymaking and freedom from restraint. The ancient Celts and later the Anglo Saxons called this Solstice Yule and also celebrated it as the birthday of the Sun.

The Celtics Druids and the Saxons burned Yule logs. The logs were usually of oak and the ashes were mixed with cow dung and spread across the field as a prayer for prosperous crops in the dates all the way back to Ancient Rome. It came to England from Germany when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840. Santa Claus came to England about the same time.

The custom of exchanging presents may have originated with England's Boxing Day. On the day after Christmas the poor boxes of the churches were opened and the money called the Dole of the Christmas Box was distributed among the poor. As far as Mr.Claus, there are many stories from many countries about his original but most scholars agree that his myth is based on the life of the Christian Saint Nicholas.

Galungan, The Greatest Balinese Holiday

Galungan is one of Indonesian Official National Holidays. For Balinese people, Galungan is the most important and a must celebrated holiday in their calendar. And this month, in 14th October, the holiday will be celebrated again.

Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occurs every 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan is the last day of the holiday. Galungan means "When the Dharma is winning." During this holiday the Balinese gods visit the Earth and leave on Kuningan

Occurring once in every 210 days in the pawukon (Balinese cycle of days), Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremony that is celebrated by all Balinese. During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes. They must be suitably entertained and welcomed, and prayers and offerings must be made for them. Those families who have ancestors that have not yet been cremated, but are still buried in the village cemetery, must make offerings at the graves.

A "penjor"
Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan 'holiday' the day before, where the family is seen to be busily preparing offerings and cooking for the next day. While the women of the household have been busy for days before creating beautifully woven 'banten' (offerings made from young coconut fronds), the men of our village usually wake up well before dawn to join with their neighbours to slaughter a pig unlucky enough to be chosen to help celebrate this occasion. Then the finely diced pork is mashed to a pulp with a grinding stone, and moulded onto sate sticks that have been already prepared by whittling small sticks of bamboo. Chickens may also be chosen from the collection of free-range chickens that roam around the house compound. Delicate combinations of various vegetables, herbs and spices are also prepared by the men to make up a selection of 'lawar' dishes. While much of this cooking is for use in the offerings to be made at the family temple, by mid-morning, once all the cooking is done, it is time for the first of a series of satisfying feasts from what has been prepared. While the women continue to be kept busy with the preparations of the many offerings to be made at the family temple on the day of Galungan, the men also have another job to do this day, once the cooking is finished. A long bamboo pole, or 'penjor', is made to decorate the entrance to the family compound. By late Tuesday afternoon all over Bali the visitor can see these decorative poles creating a very festive atmosphere in the street.
On Wednesday, the day of Galungan, one will find that most Balinese will try to return to their own ancestral home at some stage during the day, even if they work in another part of the island. This is a very special day for families, where offerings are made to God and to the family ancestors who have come back to rest at this time in their family temple. As well as the family temple, visits are made to the village temple with offerings as well, and to the homes of other families who may have helped the family in some way over the past six months.
The day after Galungan is a time for a holiday, visiting friends, maybe taking the opportunity to head for the mountains for a picnic. Everyone is still seen to be in their 'Sunday best' as they take to the streets to enjoy the festive spirit that Galungan brings to Bali.
The date for Galungan and other special Balinese days is shown on the Balinese Calendar

Travel To Ubud, Center Of Bali’s Magical Arts And Culture

Far removed from the drunken bikini scene in Kuta, Ubud can be described as a magical, wonderful, cultural center. Above all, it is famous as an arts and crafts hub. Half (if not more) of the town and nearby villages seem to consist of artists' workshops and galleries, mostly retailing cheap reproductions for tourists.

There are some remarkable architectural sights, artistic gems to be found, and a general feeling of well being to be enjoyed thanks to the spirit, surroundings and climate.

While Ubud seems to outsiders like one small town, it is in fact 14 villages, each run by its own banjar (the land-owning married men's association; in effect the local government). It's clear that Ubud has been growing rapidly and some central parts are coping less well with the influx of tourists than in previous years (although the drop in visitors following 9/11 and the Kuta bombings slowed development). That said, most developments are sympathetic to the zeitgeist, if not designed specifically in the style of Balinese architecture. Growth is continuing due to the popularity of the Ubud area, but there are still terraced rice fields along the rivers and regular, quiet village life carries on relatively undisturbed just a stone's throw away. However, the encroachment of hotel rooms onto paddy fields, particularly near Monkey Forest and and along the Agung river is noticeable. Many hotels will promote themselves as being "in Ubud" when they are more likely to actually be located in one of the surrounding villages that make up the greater Ubud.

Due to its location 600 meters above sea level, Ubud enjoys somewhat cooler temperatures than the coast (sometimes necessary to bring a pullover for the evening), although the midday sun can still be scorching, and the humidity usually relentless.

There are some great sights in the town of Ubud which are easily walked between. You will need some from of transport to get to the temples in the vicinity. An easy option is to join a tour or you can just charter a car and driver as needed.

* Botanic Garden, Kutuh Kaja. The recently opened Botanic Garden is a wonderful way to spend a few hours walking around and exploring the valley that it fills. It is best to go in the morning and avoid the afternoon heat.

* Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), Bedulu village, Gianyar. The centerpiece here is a cave dating back to the 11th century, the entrance which is an ornately carved demon's mouth. Inside are some fragmentary lingam and yoni (phallus and vagina) statues, as well as a statue of Ganesha. Statues stand guard around pools near the entrance. Other part of the Goa Gajah complex werre not excavated until the 1950s. Nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A little path leads to a waterfall, rice fields and some Buddhist stupa fragments.

* Gunung Kawi (Poet Mountain), Tampaksiring (18 km northeast from Ubud). Dating from the 11th century, this is presumed to be the burial complex of King Anak Wungsu and his many wives. Reached by climbing down 371 steps, the location at the bottom of a steep valley lined with paddy fields is stunning. The smaller complex on the south side of the river is presumed to be for the king's wives, while the larger complex is thought to be for the King himself and perhaps his concubines. You must take off your shoes before entering into the central pura complex. About one km downstream there are further tomb cloisters. On the way back up, take a break at Cafe Kawi, which has cold drinks and fresh breezes.

* Monkey Forest, Jalan Monkey Forest, Ubud. A sacred forest full of ravenous monkeys, so don't bring any food or risk bites and rabies injections. Stroll through to find Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, a temple of the dead. A visit to the very informative website beforehand is highly recommended

* Museum Puri Lukisan (Museum of Fine Arts), Jalan Raya, Ubud (on the main road just west of the market). The first private museum in Bali which opened in 1954. Three buildings showcasing traditional and modern Balinese art. The displays are a little musty and English labeling is a little spotty, but some of the works, particularly the carvings, are quite amazing. Exhibits by noted artists I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and Rudolph Bonnet, amongst others.

* Tirta Empul, Tampaksiring (20 km northeast from Ubud). One of the holiest temples on Bali, built around hot springs that now bubble eerily in the central courtyard. Balinese themselves come here to bathe and purify themselves physically and spiritually, and during Galungan the sacred barong masks are bathed here. The complex dates to 960, but the present buildings are all modern reconstructions.

Travel To Kuta Beach Of Lombok Island

Travel to Kuta Beach will give you a great moment. Kuta is a town in the south of the island of Lombok in Indonesia. The scenery is spectacular, with cliffs and mountains reaching the coast creating jugged and awe inspiring landscapes and views. The beaches are also some of the best in Indonesia, with pristine white sand and transparent blue greens in the water. Kuta has some of the best surfing in the world, so naturally many of the tourists are surfers.

But Kuta also has a wide variety of hotels and restaurants for back packers to wealthy travelers. So many travelers travel to Kuta just to unwind, relax on the beach, rent a motorcycle, read a book or take a nap in the afternoon.

The village of Kuta provides all the basic travel necessities, such as toiletries, tropical clothing, souvenirs, fruits and bottled water. However, closest place where you can buy pharmacy supplies, luggage, develop photos, and make travel reservations is in the city of Praya. Praya is also the nearest place with a bank and ATM machine to take local money. Praya is approximately 30 km from Kuta. If you hire a driver for a day tour of the area, the driver can arrange to pass through Praya. Alternatively, Praya can be reached via local public transport. The trip is about an hour ride so prudent travelers bring enough local currency for their stay.

Travel To Senggigi Beach Of Lombok Island

Senggigi Beach
The Senggigi region can be broadly divided into four areas: far northern Tanjung, north Mangsit Beach, central Senggigi and the southern stretch near Batu Bolong. The exact boundaries of each areas are rather ill-defined. One section bleeds into another. Pockets of development can be found in some areas, while long stretches of open, undeveloped land lie in between. Nightlife and major restaurants are concentrated in the central town of Senggigi. Tanjung, Mangsit, and Batu Bolong are primarily home to resorts and offer very little other tourist activities, such as shopping and nightlife. The first time traveler should be aware of these distinct regional differences. Simply booking a hotel in Senggigi could mean a relatively remote location where the town center can only be reached by taxi.

Senggigi is the place to find hotels/resorts with manicured grounds and swimming pools. Many accommodations advertise they are located only a short distance from the beach. However, the beaches can vary in quality from broad, white sand beach in one location to coarse, black sand beach in the next. Senggigi is not a typical tourist resort town where a day can be spent shopping and socializing at the local bars and restaurants (such as found in Bali). Most visitors use Senggigi as a home base and take day trips to the waterfalls, the Gili Islands, or just exploring the still authentic villages, temples, and jungle habitat found within a couple hours drive.

Lombok's post-2000 misfortunes hit Senggigi hard, with many developments halted and businesses closed and boarded up. Things are starting to improve again, with a few new villas going up, shops re-opening and attracting more tourist who seek the solitude and unspoiled scenery of Lombok.

How To Find A Reliable Discount Holiday Agent

Few of us book a holiday without looking for the best travel deals. Travel is now one of the biggest online sectors, and it’s to the internet that we turn to look for cheap holidays. There’s no shortage of sites offering extraordinary deals, but it can be difficult to know which are reliable and which aren’t. Here are some guidelines to help you tell the difference.

1. Independence

A travel agent that isn’t tied to any particular company or promoter is best placed to offer great deals. They can negotiate with a range of suppliers, or direct with airlines and accommodation owners to ensure that they get the best price for you. You can be sure that they’re not pushing you towards a particular operator and that you’re really getting good value for money.

2. Professional membership

It’s really important that a discount travel agent is a member of a professional body. In the UK, this is ABTA, the Association of British Travel Agents. ABTA members have to abide by a strict code of conduct and agencies are regularly assessed to ensure that they are meeting the organisation’s high standards. ABTA membership also means that you have a independent body to channel complaints to, should you have any problems with the agent.

3. Secure payments

If you’re booking online, it’s vital that you make sure that the site’s payment system is secure. This protects you from fraud and is an essential part of any online shopping system. If you can’t find anything on the site that gives you information on the payment system, then don’t book online.

4. Contact

A good discount holiday travel agent, whether online or on the high street, should be easily contactable and offer excellent customer service. Even at discount prices, booking a holiday is a financial commitment and you need to be sure that you can contact the agent should you need any help.

Travel To Bali, Indonesia By: Criss Lee

Traveling to Indonesia for vacation is definitely a travel you will never forget.Plan for a long ride to get there, as it is a 31 hour flight from New York. Bali is a wonderful area with an array of fun filled activities to choose from. It is the main tourist area of Indonesia

The people of Bali are very friendly, and enjoy having visitors come to their area. Many speak English to interact with tourists. They have chosen to preserve their culture for all to see rather than change it to become like other countries. The beaches are a main attraction with surfing being one of the most popular activities. Others enjoy renting a boat for the day to relax on the open waters.

Lodging in Bali ranges from small bungalows to huge fancy hotels, all with basic accommodations to meet the needs of tourists. The view from your hotel will be wonderful because of the rich beauty of the area regardless of where you choose to stay.

The people of Bali are very artistic. They enjoy painting, weaving, carving, basket making, and other arts. Children are taught art from a very early age. They often display their makings to sell to the tourists.

Temples are a main vacation attraction in Bali. They are called Pura. The temples provide an opportunity to explore religion and art of the culture. The people of Bali are still very religious, and it is very important that those visiting the Temples show respect for their religious beliefs.

Art galleries exhibit creative and attractive art work to view. Wildlife and nature reserves are popular in Bali. Many people go to get a glimpse of the very dangerous Komodo Dragon, a large lizard that is found only in the area and is extinct. The rare Java tiger is also displayed.

There are more than 400 volcanoes in Indonesia, 128 are still active. They offer a historical view of this natural creation to observe. Botanic Gardens are also a very popular attraction. Displaying flora and fauna as well as promoting conservation, people are drawn to the beauty of such attractions.

While Indonesia is a beautiful and serene place to visit, it is strongly advised at this time to be cautious with such visits due to the possibility of terrorist attacks. If you do choose to travel to the area do not travel alone and make sure you have registered with the US Embassy.

Holiday Traveling Tips By: Sally Rutherford

The holidays certainly can be stressful, and traveling during a holiday is certainly not fun. The roads are packed, traffic is thick, and everyone is anxious to get to their destination. Traveling is also more expensive. Don't you love it when people take advantage of the holidays like that?!?
I thought I could give you some tips for when you travel this holiday. Hopefully these tips can save you some peace of mind as well as money!

1. If you are flying and have presents to take ship them in advance. They will be there when you arrive and you do not have to mess with taking them on the plane. If you do take them on the plane do not wrap them. With the heightened security at airports they will probably just be unwrapped and checked anyway.
2. Consider renting an apartment or condo for a week. You can find some great deals online and save a considerable amount of money over paying for a hotel. Depending on the size of your family you may want to look into renting a vacation home.
3. Don't eat out anymore than you have to. Eating out is expensive. Use your rental to its full advantage and go to the grocery store and buy what you need to cook your own meals. Get the kids involved and let them help pick the meals and even help cook them.
4. Recreation during the holidays is one of the great benefits of having a family. You can play board games or card games. Take along a Frisbee or football and get outside and throw them around. When you rent a place for the week it offers you all kinds of ways to save money. You can take along your favorite DVDs and have some family movie time everyday.
5. If you rent a vacation home you might want to share it with another family. Being able to split the costs with someone you enjoy being around during the holidays can save you a lot of money as well. This idea may or may not work for you depending on the ages of your kids and the common interests of the family you travel with.
These are just a few holiday travel tips if you are on a budget. Even if you are not on a budget you can save some money during the holidays and have some quality time with your family that you might not get staying with a relative or in a hotel.

Influenza A H1N1 precautionary act by Indonesia

Since WHO declares it as a pandemic (on June 11, 2009), until July 27, 2009, 134,503 people are positively infected by influenza A H1N1 in the world. It is transmitted directly from human-to-human contact through cough, sneeze or things touched by the infected person. Therefore, the distribution is extremely rapid.

Some preparedness have been taken by government to suppress the number of influenza A H1N1 patients especially in Bali in order to keep tour and travel activities grow: supporting Port Health Office (thermal scanner and Health Alert Card, which must be filled in), preparing referral hospitals, supplying logistics, improving contact investigation, ILI surveillance, laboratory, communication, education and information, as well as performing International Health Regulations (IHR).

In addition, it also covers community surveillance, which is people having quite serious influenza should go to health center, while people having very serious one must go to health center, and clinical surveillance, which is developing surveillance of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in health center and hospital levels to find very serious cases, while slight cases do not need inpatient treatment in hospital.

Travel To Komodo Island : Into the Heart of The Dragon

Real dragon spurt no fire, have no need to fly and cast no magic spells. And still one look from them might render you speechless. These komodos, the real life dragon, are a sight indeed.
komodo

Gigantic, the pre-historic lizard-like creatures are about three or four meters in length, its ancestors roamed the earth up to about half a million years ago. Called "ora" by the local people, komodo dragon (Varanus Komodoensis) can easily weigh about 165 kilograms. Despite of their sheer size and appearance, they are not active hunters. What makes them intimidating is the fact that they are a patient predator. In the wild, they stalk a victim, usually a weak or injured one. One bite and that’s what it usually takes. After following the victim for a while, sometimes up to several days’ time, the komodos will devour the dying prey.

Komodo island, a small island of 280 square km is truly unique, for it is the natural habitat for this almost extinct species. Approximately one thousand and two hundred komodos reside here. The only human population on the island is at the fishing village called Komodo who supplement their income breeding goats which are used to feed the lizardz. Komodos also live in a nearby island called Rinca.

Law protects the Komodo and although they are considered harmless. It is advisable to keep them at a distance. Komodo Island is now a nature reserve, home to a number of rare bird species, deer, and wild pigs, which are prey to the lizards as well. The island can be reached by boat from Labuan Bajo, West of Flores.

Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area. The Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. It includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2.

Komodo National Park was established in 1980 and was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986. The park was initially established to conserve the unique Komodo dragon(Varanus komodoensis), first discovered by the scientific world in 1911 by J.K.H. Van Steyn. Since then conservation goals

Komodo National Park is currently among three travel destinations in Indonesia that has been qualified in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign held by the New 7 Wonders Foundation (two other candidates is Lake Toba and Krakatau Island).

Minister of Culture and Tourism: There is no tourist exodus in Indonesia

(Jakarta, 21/07/2009) Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik said is no tourist exodus in Indonesia following to the terrorist action on bombing JW Marriot and Ritz Carlton in Jakarta last Friday. The statement was based on a quick survey in Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Jakarta and Ngurah Rai Aiport, Bali.

Based on the survey, both of those Indonesia main entry-point shows no tourist exodus, this condition indicate that the bomb terror in Jakarta gave no significant effect to inbound visitors currently traveling in Indonesia.

However Jero Wacik also explains the negative impacts of the bomb-terror have already shown, the cancelation of Manchester United footballs team visit to Jakarta in their Asia Tour 2009 and the release of Travel Advisory to Indonesia by the Australia and New Zealand Government.

The Minister proclaimed that those negative impacts should be considered as challenges for Indonesia tourism stakeholders to work harder and regain Indonesia images as an attractive International tourist destination yet safe to visit.

Unfortunately the action of terror occurred when Indonesia hotel occupancy particularly in Jakarta and Bali are in a very good position which is around 70%-80%, other than that images of Indonesia has been increasing positively in the last couple of year, thus Indonesia tourist stakeholders must be working hand in hand to regain the condition.

Safe Holiday Vacation Tips By: Suresh Nair

Imagine yourself on the beach, in the mountains, sipping hot chocolate or fresh coffee. The sun is up, the birds are singing, and the clouds are far away. It's the vacation we all dream of, but how often does such perfection linger, even at the ideal getaway? There are hurricanes, power outages, domestic disasters, monsters ... well, maybe not monsters, but you have the idea. The perfect vacation is hard to come by, but making a checklist is a good path to take.

First off, where is this secret haven? No matter what season, bad weather is always bound to sneak over those emerald peaks. So, check the weather; it doesn't take long. As the vacation approaches, keep an eye on weekly weather forecasts, just in case that raincoat needs dusting. Always keep an umbrella handy, though. Car trouble and rain never mix well.

That brings us to the second point of concern. When was the last time the car saw a mechanic? Be sure all tune-ups and oil changes are up to date, make sure the windshield wipers work well, and check the tires. Make sure all tires meet the pressure requirements. Blowouts are just as dangerous, if not more so, so don't overfill the tires.

Stock up on cleaning supplies (moist toilettes, etc.) for interior cleanliness, especially if younger family members are tagging along. Hang grocery bags from the glove compartment and/or headrests to keep the floors tidy, and if you don't have a map light, slide a small flashlight into the door pocket. Keep napkins handy should you need to check the engine, and stow a gallon of water and a quart or two of oil in the trunk. An overheated engine is the worst way to start a vacation.

Don't leave yet, though. Make sure everything at the home base is in order and hazard-free. If you have pets, make sure a friend or relative has time to tend to them or check them into a pet hotel the night before traveling to eliminate last minute delays.

Notify the neighbors of your absence. More often than not, they'd be happy to keep an eye out for ill-wishers. If the neighbors cannot or are unwilling to pick up the mail, just have it held at the post office. This not only keeps the mailbox from overflowing, but excess mail, and particularly a pile of daily papers, only serves as a big 'Rob me!' sign at the end of your driveway.

For that 'really not gone' look, purchase an outlet timer for table lamps. This allows you to program lights to turn on and off, giving the impression that someone is still around. However, make sure all other appliances are switched off and unplugged. If you hire a house sitter, make sure to leave a list of emergency contact numbers, including the fire and police department. If a house sitter is not in order, secure and lock all doors and windows, and turn on the alarm system should you have one.

So, you're ready to go, right? Wallet, keys, clothes ... check; but wait! Are you just bringing cash and checks? For most things, this is all you need, but major credit cards are always handy for unforeseen emergencies. This payment option also leaves little room for dispute at the hotel counter. If you do bring cash along, make sure it is clipped neatly inside your wallet or stowed away somewhere secure. If your destination is water related, put the bills in a plastic bag, just in case that water proves irresistible.

Now you're ready. Pack up the kids and hit the road; your vacation awaits you. Soon that hot chocolate and romantic sunset will be a reality.

You didn't leave the stove on, did you?

How to Take a Holiday in a Recession by Julie Samuel

The newfound strength of the Euro, a hot British summer prediction, and (of course) the recession. These are just some of the reasons we expected to see holidays abroad on the decline this year. Who can justify their usual two-week break in Spain, when it is no longer "cheap" to drink and eat on the back of the powerful pound? What makes it even more unjustifiable is the hot summer Britain has been promised this year. It would make perfect sense to skip the flight altogether and book a local holiday in Britain

Seemingly, there are many advantages to "staying-in" this summer. One can cut out the cost of flights, and make things simple this year by staying within the confines of the UK. It is also somewhat easier to leave your holiday booking to the last minute if you aren't going abroad. This means you can wait for a weekend when you have enough cash to take it easy, and ensure you will still have a job after the summer. No commitment required- a very attractive aspect with a recession threatening to cut your salary at the drop of a hat.
However, there is also something quite revitalizing about going abroad for a summer holiday that just can't be replaced by a local break. Let's face it, no matter how promising the weather predications, the past few weeks have been somewhat grey, and there really is no guarantee of sunshine in England.
Another factor to consider is the effect that summer holidays have on your health. Getting out and about in some real sunshine can do wonders for your well-being. Simply being out of your usual surroundings for a while can boost your mood and reduce stress considerably.
The good news is that you can probably still afford to go abroad this year, and it is definitely an option worth considering when you only get one chance at a real summer holiday.
Something to think about is cutting down on your holiday time. A shorter one-week break abroad may be more beneficial than the two-weeks at home, which can leave you feeling like you never really got away at all. You can still get your annual dose of wine and sunshine and save on costs.
You can find some real holiday bargains this year as well. The recession and accompanying consumer attitude mean that hotel and flights are cheaper than ever. Use the internet to explore some summer holiday options and to book some great hotel deals online.

Tips for Planning a Trip Abroad by Pragya Katariya

You may be going on a well deserved vacation with your family or planning a honeymoon trip to an exotic locale. While discovering a new destination may seem exciting, keep in a mind a little bit of preparation can make your getaway all the more special

Here are some travel tips that can minimize any unpleasant circumstances that may arise when you are not familiar with the country you are travelling to
Be familiar with the culture and traditions of your destination
East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet. Rudyard Kipling's views may not seem entirely true with the world becoming a global village. There are, however, still differences that must be taken into consideration.
It is better to be acquainted with the culture and traditions of the country you are visiting. For example, you may be travelling to Bali, a country equally well-known for its beautiful landscapes and temples as it is for its warm people. However, keep in mind that you must be suitably dressed to enter a temple. If you go wearing shorts, you may not be allowed to enter. Keeping into consideration facts such as this can make all the difference to your visit.
General information about your destination
Weather: This will help you decide what you have to pack for the journey and stay.
Currency: No travel trip is complete without shopping and bringing back souvenirs. So it is important to be familiar with the currency, notes and coins and their denominations.
Cost of local items: This will help you plan your budget and also give you a rough idea of the costs so that you are not taken for a ride when you go for your shopping expedition.
Booking accommodation: Book your accommodation well in advance. This is especially important if you are travelling during the high season and you may find it difficult to get a hotel or guesthouse within your budget.
Dealing with language problems: Be familiar with common words and phrases to make going around easier. Then again, when commuting from one place to another, do write down the destination and your hotel address in the local language, otherwise the taxi drivers may not understand where you want to go.
Paperwork and documents: Know all the documents that are required for travelling to a particular country and ensure all your paperwork is complete so that you don't face hassles once you reach the place.
Practical necessities
Make two copies of your passport. Keep them in separate places, for example, you can leave one copy in your room and keep another with your friend. Should your passport be lost or stolen, you can use the copy to exit the country or use it to facilitate the replacement process.
Email yourself all the important information such as credit card numbers, passport number, your driving license details etc. and anything else that could be of importance if an emergency arises.
Finally, run a final checklist before starting your vacation. You should have the following: Passport, tickets, car rental and hotel reservation receipts/agreements, credit cards, medications or prescriptions, if required, addresses, password and any other important information that you may need. If everything is in order, you are all set for a smooth journey abroad.
